Tips & tricks for downturned eyes

Klara has deep set eyes that are upturned at the bottom and slightly hooded. We call these downturned eyes because it’s hard to make a flick with this eye shape. We’ve previously looked at night out makeup with this eye shape so today we’re going to do something more bright and summery.

Step 1: Baby blue

We’re starting with a shade of blue to match Klara’s top and contrast against her hazel eyes. This pale baby blue is from the Zoeva palette. Tap on gently with a brush, more can be added as required.

To even out her skin tone we’ll apply some YSL colour match concealer below her eyes and gently blend it in to give a smooth finish.

Lashes next, we’re just going to place a few of these short lashes into Klara’s own. Her lashes are quite pale so these will really show up well.

Step 2: Tricks for luscious lips

For the lips we’ll round out the cupid’s bow and bring the line down and deep into the corners with a pencil. Start the bottom lip slightly in from the natural shape and pull the line down towards the centre, this will really round out the lips and instantly give a bubbly, fun look.

We’ve gone for an earthy reddish-brown for the main colour, a darker shade like this makes it easier to draw over the natural shape and still keep it looking real.

Step 3: Lift those eyes

A white eyeliner drawn onto the waterline really helps to open the eyes up. To give the illusion of lift to downturned eyes just apply it from the centre and across to the inner corner, and not to the outer edge.

Applying a brown eyeshadow to the outer corner below the eyes will push them up. These two tricks work great together and really help to lift the eyes.

Because Klara has hooded eyes an eyeliner across the top lid won’t work so well. Instead, we’re using the same shade of brown eyeshadow and just applying it with a fine brush and only to the outer edge of the eyelid, keeping it close to the lash line. It’s a much less intense application and gives a softer finish, and we can still have a slight flick at the edge.

Step 4: Final touches

Klara is curling her own lashes here. A good squeeze will bond the fake ones with her own and keep everything securely in place.

Mascara is just going onto the top lashes today, we do normally like to apply it to the lower ones too but only going on top is another nifty trick that helps lift the eyes.

We’ll finish with a slightly darker shade of lipstick.

You don’t always need to play with dark colours. For daily looks you can just have fun with lighter shades. It’s easy to copy the heavy, dark styles that are all over youtube, but to use colours to your advantage requires more thinking power. So, give it a try and let us know how you get on.
