Today we’re joined by dancer and performer Vivija who has kindly agreed to us demonstrating a Game of Thrones inspired makeover. Who doesn’t love Game of Thrones? Nothing too complex, just more about how you can play with accessories and clothes.
Step 1: Colour correction
Vivija has sensitive skin so we’re going to allow her skin to breath and just colour correct using YSL Touche Eclat concealers. We’ll apply a green concealer around the nose and cheeks (in our favourite kitty-cat design) where the skin in more pink. Around the mouth and cupid’s bow, where the natural skin tone is more yellow, we’ll use a pink concealer. Under the eyes Vivija’s skin is slightly dry and a little darker so we’re going with Perfect Touch by L'Oréal here. It is also more yellowish here but if we used a whiter shade it would end up looking grey. Blend everything with your fingertip. These YSL products are great because unlike some others they are also hydrating.
Pro tip: Touche Eclat Neutralizer over the eyelids gives a great base coat and also evens out the skin tones which helps to brighten the eyes.
Step 2: Skin deep
Any remaining blemishes can be disguised with concealer. Use a small brush and apply it with the tiniest of strokes and like magic they’ll disappear. Finish the face with a dusting of powder using a soft brush. This will help stop any glowing or shiny spots where light bounces off the skin. Zao powder is a favourite of ours for this.
If we just covered the skin with foundation we’d get an even coverage but we’d also lose definition and natural shadows. Keeping the makeup light evens out the skin tones and enhances the features to give a natural finish once everything has been absorbed into the skin.
Step 3: Eyes
So let’s start with a classic deep set eyes technique. Push the brush on to the brow bone and follow the shape all the way along the eye socket to give a natural looking shadow.
Next, we’ll blend a pale shade above this and below the eyebrows, this will really start to lift the eyes.
A fine line of black liner is applied next, keeping it close to the lash line.
Like many people, Vivija’s eyes are not symmetrical and her right eye is a little more hooded than the left so the crease breaks here, but we can correct this with a little trick.
We’ll take the line across the lower eyelid, just about half way and close to the lashes, we’ll then connect it to the upper line. We’re also going to draw onto the top eyelid and follow the shape of the eye into the crease.
This needs to be a nice rounded shape and we need to fill in the gap at the corner of the eye. This is the only way you can make a thick flick work on this eye shape.
Theatrical makeup needs to be a lot heavier than your average night out makeup. Stage makeup gives us the freedom to go bold and much darker than normal tutorials we would do, which for makeup artists is always fun.
Carefully lay the fake eyelashes on top the real ones and gently nudge them into place with your fingertip whilst the eye is open. Brows next, intense eye make need slightly thicker brows, be careful not to go overboard but fill in any gaps to even them out.
Step 4: Bubble up the lips
Using a lip liner, outline the lips and bubble them up to give a bolder shape.
Vivija’s braids call for something more playful so we’re sharpening the angle of her cupid’s bow. For the lower lip, start the line slightly inside the natural shape and bring the angle down towards the centre to round them out. We’ve chosen to fill them with a dark red lipstick which complements the eye make and also Vivija’s hair colour.
Finish off by applying a light covering of Loreal foundation, nothing heavy just a quick retouch with light strokes using a large, soft brush.
Step 5: Maybe just a little contouring...
The double braid hairstyle exposes Vivija’s whole face so we’re going to contour it slightly. Kiss and Blush applied close to the hairline can be blended around the upper forehead and slightly down towards the temples.
Vivija’s just going to finish up now by curling her eyelashes, then a quick sweep of mascara and we’re finished.
