When a makeup artist prepares for a night out

After filming a daily makeup look, you all wanted to see how a professional does the night-out makeup routine, so as requested, Maja shares the tricks of the trade, creating a sultry, dark makeup look for deep-set, protruding eyes in this tutorial.

Perfected skin

It is common to use a heavier, more high-coverage foundation for a night out, but if your skin is dry, such foundation can quickly accentuate dry patches, go into creases (or wrinkles) and wreak havoc on your whole makeup look already at the beginning of the process. A hydrating primer works well in such cases, especially for drier skin types, because it not only hydrates the skin underneath the makeup, but also helps prolong the wear of the foundation and makes it look more natural.

The key to using heavy-duty foundation and not look plastic is in being economical with the amount of product applied. Since such foundations tend to have high coverage as it is, it is completely unnecessary to cake it on like there's no tomorrow. Instead, use a dense, fluffy brush and buff it in to achieve an even application and a natural finish at the same time.

Apply some highlighting concealer under the eyes in a triangle shape and lightly blend it with a tapping motion of your fingers. Set the concealer with a mattifying powder and a smaller fluffy brush. Don't buff the powder, but lightly tap it on the skin to prevent the product from going into creases.

Use a matte contouring product in powder form and make your cheekbones pop by blending it under the cheekbones with a soft angled brush. Finally, with the fluffiest of your brushes, apply a soft pink, matte blush on the apples of your cheeks.

Sultry eyes

Maja used a brow powder just a shade darker than her natural brow color and a precise, small brush to fill in her eyebrows. You can use any product or shade that you know works for you.

Pro tip: If you also have pale skin and blond hair, like Maja, we advise not going more than a shade or two darker than your natural brow color. "Caterpillar" brows will definitely not make you look like a beautiful butterfly.

Apply a thin layer of an eyeshadow primer over the lids, up to the brows, and let it set. Maja has deep-set, slightly protruding eyes, and priming them first is a good way to prevent product transfer and fallout.

Use a matte light brown eyeshadow and with a small, fluffy brush apply it all over the lid, focusing the color especially on the length of the crease.

Apply it also along the lower lash line.

Next, use a darker brown shade and apply it over the lid, staying clear of the crease.

Accentuate the outer two third of the lower lash line with it as well, and connect the lower and outer lash line in the outer corner with a small flick.

With a flat brush and a matte burgundy shade, go over the lower half of the upper lid, blending as you go.

The final shade should be the darkest brown you have – blend it in the outer corner on the upper lid to intensify the look.

A shimmery skin-tone shade should be applied on the brow bone to lift the eyes.

Black gel eyeliner is a staple for night-out makeup. Line the upper lash line from the inner corner towards the outer corner, finishing with a cat-eye flick at the end. A precise pointy brush (and a steady hand) is a must for this job.

Finish the eyes with a few coats of your favorite mascara.

Wine-red lips

For a crisp, even application of a dark and creamy lipstick, you will need three things: a wine-red lip liner, a lip brush and a wine-red lipstick (or a lipstick palette containing such a shade). Line the lips with the lip liner first to prevent the lipstick from bleeding over the edges. Carefully apply the lipstick with the brush. If you make a mistake, don't worry, it happens to the best of us. Have cotton buds and micellar water at the ready to clean up and perfect the look.
